Beloved Community Welcomes David J. Lewis and Sasha Rabkin to Board of Directors

By: Beloved Community

Beloved Community is delighted to welcome David J. Lewis and Sasha Rabkin and to our Board of Directors. Each member of Beloved Community’s board has deep roots in equity work and is personally and professionally committed to our mission, vision, and core values.

Based in Houston, Texas, David J. Lewis combines his background in education, philanthropy, and non-profit community engagement to support intentional, strategic change within organizations. Lewis serves as the Executive Director at the Texas Southern University Foundation, a 501c(3) organization supporting its parent institution, Texas Southern University, in its philanthropic and community engagement pursuits. Prior to his appointment as Executive Director, David served as the Assistant Vice President for University Partnerships and Transformative Initiatives in the Office of the President at Texas Southern University.

“The thing that caught my attention with Beloved Community, from the very beginning, was the simple statement that people change systems,” Lewis said. “Often we do a program assessment that tells us somebody enjoyed our program or that it helped them to learn this new thing. But the question is: Beyond that convening space, did this actually have a real and deep impact? Beloved thinks about its impact in ways that are not only meaningful, but sustainable.”

With more than two decades of experience in diverse educational landscapes, Sasha Rabkin is a visionary leader devoted to revolutionizing education and empowering communities. He currently serves as Chief of Program Strategy and Innovation at the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF), a national nonprofit that pursues multigenerational change through scientific discoveries that further learners’ brilliance and transform their PreK-12 futures.

“There's a real opportunity to be a part of a future that is more strategic, better funded, and more impactful, and that starts by centering the communities in which Beloved Community is working,” Rabkin said. “I think what Beloved puts out in the world is a fundamentally different frame in which to think about how solutions are manifest in the community and how people play a role in those solutions.”

Beloved Community is so thankful to have these two compassionate visionaries join Darren Isom, Jana Sikdar, and Michael Goetz on our Board of Directors. We look forward to their insights as we grow our organization and deepen its roots in New Orleans and throughout the nation.
