Shantell Lee
Associate Director, Equity in Schools She/Her
Shantell Lee is an Associate Director of Equity in Schools at Beloved Community. She has worked in New Orleans charter schools as an English Language Arts (ELA) educator and nonprofits based in New Orleans whose work centered around education equity. She has also mentored new educators through Loyola University’s teacher residency program and has worked as a teacher leader for the NOLA Public Schools’ Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee.
Most recently, Shantell was the ELA manager for the Louisiana Department of Education where she focused on all things ELA for grades K-12 with some duties including the supervision of the development of the ELA Guidebooks curriculum and professional learning for ELA educators throughout the state.
Shantell was born and bred in New Orleans with her roots stemming from the Uptown area. She is also a proud HBCU graduate and holds a B.A. from Dillard University. In addition, she holds a M.A. from the University of New Orleans and a M.A.T. from Loyola University. Currently, she is completing her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at Louisiana State University where her research focuses on how to use writing instruction to address trauma in secondary school students.
As an advocate for equitable schools, she is invested in ensuring that all students have access to the tools and support that are necessary for post-secondary success and that educators are equipped to meet the needs of all of their students. She is thrilled to work with Beloved Community as a change agent in countering the oppressive structures that are embedded into the culture of our country.
